THE AWFUL TRUTH

• According to independent website, Moneyfacts, more than 300 mortgage deals vanished from the market in the space of just one
day last week.

• Almost 3,000 mortgage deals were withdrawn in March (the figure stood at more than 15,000 before the credit crunch hit)

• Leading lender, Nationwide has reported approvals for new mortgages are down 40% on a year ago

• Research suggests the average rate on a two-year-fixed rate mortgage has risen from 6.15% to 6.29% over the last two weeks

• Home repossessions could soar to more that 60,000 this year as families struggle to cope with rising mortgage payments

• The average house price is now around nine times average earnings, up from around four-and-a-half times 10 years ago

• Analysis of government data has suggested that families at risk of repossession are now spending over 75% of their disposable income on mortgage payments (all the families affected had disposable incomes of £1,000 or less and mortgage payments up to £750.)
